STAUBLOG: Lewis, Bono & Generation Next

July 14th, 2004

A lot of hand wringing takes place when my generation looks at the next. They color outside the lines, blur the distinctions between sacred and profane, Bono says the “F” word in one breath and thanks God for a music award in the next, Destiny’s child praises Jesus and takes off their clothes.

I have a sobering word for naysayers and it comes from my compatriot, the paragon of thought, spirit and art, CS Lewis. “The sources of unbelief among young people today do not lie in those young people…This very obvious fact—that each generation is taught by an earlier generation—must be kept very firmly in mind. …Nothing, which is not in the teachers, can flow from them into the pupils.”

Whatever this generation lacks, it likely springs from the fount of my generation’s insufficiencies. There is hope! Check out Cameron Strang’s interview on CNN this AM and order your copy of Mark Joseph’s Faith, God & Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Yours for the pursuit of God in the company of friends, Dick Staub.

PS. And remember, “these are the best of times and the worst of times, but they are the only times we have.” (For Now).
